Leipzig hosts one of the foremost permanent collections of historical instruments in the world at the Altes Instrumenten Museum in the Grassi Museum. Eras of european musical instrument invention are represented, from early horns and violin making to the development of the pianoforte. Amongst this great collection, which also features one of the three existing original Cristofori pianofortes, two of the earliest instruments of the Leipzig piano manufacturers Blüthner and Irmler on display.
